In the decree of July 27 of 1887, the mintage of 5 Francs was published, 8.000 pieces in total. Immediately after the publication, the government of the Independent State ordered the production of the total mintage of 5 Francs, along with partial mintages of 2 Francs, 1 Franc & 50 Centimes. This production was planned to be completed on August 14 of the same year and to be sent to Antwerp for transportation to Congo. Due to the late request to alter the die of the obverse, to abbreviate the legends, the shipping was held up. It took until September to finalize the first and only order, containing 5 Francs of 1887. At this time, certain personalities had already ordered to obtain an example of the 5 Francs, which could only be struck with the old original dies. Of the variety with long legends, it is estimated that there are about 100 pieces minted.
