On the occasion of the marriage of King Baudouin and Dona Fabiola de Mora y Aragon, on December 15th 1960, the Minister of Finances gave his approval, on December 6th 1960, to the issue of a coin of 50 Francs. On the proposal of the king's cabinet, Carlos Van Dionant was appointed to manufacture the models. This new coin presented, on the obverse, the double portrait of the sovereigns and, on the reverse, their coat of arms. As only a Latin version was issued, Van Dionant only had to make two bas-reliefs and received the sum of 40,000 francs for this.
